Just say yes, just say there’s nothing holding you back
It’s not a test, nor a trick of the mind
For the touch of your warm skin
As I breathe you in
Snow Patrol – Just Say Yes
Two years ago I ran my first marathon. I just said yes. The training consisted of three to four runs per week, with the longest being 14km. For marathon runners this may sound unbelievable because even the longest run was short when compared with official events. What is more important is that along with running there was a great emphasis on breathing exercises, each day for 10 minutes, for the duration of the 100 days training.
The way I enjoyed the running and marathons has led to the way I work and live today. In psychological treatment I now put more emphasis on the body, giving energy to the body has become the backbone of my personal daily life. It also gave rise to my mission to show people the strength of schema therapy in combination with a focus on the body.
Last Monday I started running a new workshop together with Marie-Lotte van de Kamp about our stress system, breathing exercises and how our life patterns can sabotage us in meeting our needs.
Our 10 participants rated the information about the stress system and the breathing exercises as useful, as they did the content on schema therapy. The three subjects were all rated in variation of more than moderate to very useful. All participants showed a decrease in breaths per minute after working with breathing exercises. 7 out of 10 participants started on the Secure Nest platform after attending the workshop.
When we say yes, it seems to work out right.
When the participants have finished the Secure Nest schema therapy self-help program, we can offer blended care and in September 2019 they will be the first to start in blended group schema therapy. In this process we will help them to focus on the body by adding breathing exercises to Homework and My Files.
If you want to say yes too, please come to one of our workshops (see our brochure, in Dutch, for dates and contact details). This spring we will offer them in the Netherlands, in Utrecht and Zeist. If you are a therapist and want to try out new ideas, please start working on our platform, Secure Nest. It really can be used as a backbone in treatment from a schema therapy perspective. You can also refer people to our workshop.
For the next few weeks there will be no blog from me because of school holidays in the Netherlands. I will be taking a deep breath and a small break, passing the blog writing back to Sally and Joseph. Speak to you soon.
