A Self-Education Program For Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy Self-Help Modules
The Self-Education Program consists of 16 modules over 3 weeks

Our mission at Secure Nest is to ‘increase the accessibility of schema therapy to enrich the wellbeing of individuals’ and one thing we realised on our journey to create a platform of tools for this therapy, is that there was little in the way of an online program for individuals. We wanted to fix that.

Last week we made some changes to Secure Nest which open up the platform to use by individuals without a therapist. At the heart of this change is the Secure Nest Self-Education Program which consists of personalised online modules. A series of emails guides an individual through the set of 16 modules over 3 weeks.

A range of exercises including imagery exercises and mindfulness recordings will help individuals to understand themselves, their feelings, schemas and core emotional needs. An initial assessment at the beginning of the program provides an overview of an individuals schemas, related core emotional needs and coping styles. The assessment results are displayed in an accessible overview in the My Modes (and Identify My Modes) feature.

We wanted to provide this overview to give individuals (and therapists) an understanding of how the program works. The program can be used by individuals or by clients who are linked with a therapist.

Note for therapists: Therapists don’t have access to complete the program with their own account, but do have access to view all the module content by visiting the Library feature.

Here is how it works:

1. If you don’t already have an account, you will need to create one (start here). The field to link a therapist with your account is now optional, but individuals who choose not to link a therapist will need to complete a wellbeing questionnaire.

2. Once you have an account, to begin the Self-Education Program, choose the option from the dashboard.

3. Following an introduction to the program, you will be asked to rate the strength of 18 statements, these relate to your schemas.

4. You will be provided an overview of your 5 strongest schemas and the related core emotional needs.

5. Following that you will be asked to rate your strongest personal schema-coping strategy.

6. You will then be provided the option to continue the program by opting in to receive our 3 week email program and have My Modes identified from the assessment results.

7. Should you opt in to receive the emails, you will receive the welcome email immediately, keep an eye on your inbox to make sure you receive it (it may land in a promotional folder) and whitelist the email address to make sure you receive them all (try the instructions here).

8. If you opted in to create My Modes from the survey results it will add the Healthy Adult Mode, Happy Child Mode, Vulnerable Child Mode, Coping Mode and Dysfunctional Parent Mode into My Modes. The Vulnerable Child Mode and Coping Mode are personalised based on your responses in the questionnaires. These modes can be edited (personalised) as you continue to learn more about them.

9. The emails will guide you through the 3 week program which takes you in a structured manner through the 16 modules available in the Library.

The great thing about the modules used in the program, is that they can be revisited at anytime (while you maintain a subscription). They can also be linked to any mode in My Modes. We will dive deeper into using the modules this way in a later post.

Note for therapists: You could ask your clients to complete the Self-Education Program (as homework) to promote connection, engagement and between session support or even provide it to individuals on your waiting list, so they gain an understanding before beginning therapy. All modes populated by the program can be personalised in your client’s My Modes. You could signup as an individual if you have a personal email address to try the program yourself.

We hope this overview of the Self-Education Program has been helpful. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or suggestions.
